Description/Blazon
A silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in diameter consisting of a maroon disc with white border containing the motto "REFUGIUM ET VIRTUS," in maroon letters, a white undulating serpent.

Symbolism
Maroon and white are the colors of the Medical Department and the serpent is an ancient symbol of the profession.  The motto is translated "Refuge and Strength."

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 2 May 1942.
